Experts from the International Creative Laboratory NGC Lab will tell how to create music for movies

How to create music for a movie, what virtual musical instruments are, how to negotiate a composer's fee – experts from the Next Generation Composers Lab will tell you about this and much more in a series of lectures and master classes. The NGC Lab events will take place from July 19 to 24. The workshops will be open for general public also, not only for professional film composers. The main lecturer and headliner of the Lab will be the well known Hollywood composer and conductor Harry Gregson-Williams and he will give three lectures and one concert. The symphony orchestra and choir under his direction will perform the famous soundtracks written by him for Hollywood films. The concert will take place at the Moscow House of Music on July 21.

The Next Generation Composers Lab is Russia's first international creative laboratory for film composers. The host of the project is Russian Musical Union, and the official partner is Russian Union of Composers. The workshops will take place in Moscow from July 19 to 24. Music industry experts from around the world will talk about the creative and technical aspects of writing an original film soundtrack. The main audience of the event will be professional musicians and composers from eight countries selected by an expert jury as part of a creative competition. Some workshops will be available to a wide audience.

In particular, three lectures will be delivered by the laboratory's headliner, a famous American composer, author of dozens of soundtracks for popular Hollywood films (Shrek, The Martian), Golden Globe and Grammy nominee Mr. Harry Gregson-Williams. At the lecture entitled “The Film Music Industry and the Production Process”, Mr. Harry Gregson-Williams will talk about the mechanisms for financing projects in the music industry and career opportunities in this area. The lecture entitled “Musical Programming and Mixing” will be devoted to an overview of sample libraries, the choice of instruments and the secrets of music processing. In conclusion, the composer will share his practical experience of managing a music team at different stages of creating scores for films or television projects.

Harry Gregson-Williams' lectures will be held on July 21 at the Moscow Film School. For those who are not participants of the Lab, there will be only 20 tickets available.

A day earlier, on July 20, Harry Gregson-Williams will hold a master class where he will acquaint the audience with the process of creating music for cinema, talk about the peculiarities of working with directors, including Tony Scott and Andrew Adamson, and share his experience of creating a unique atmosphere in cinema with the help of music. The master class is designed for both professionals in the field of the music industry and a wide audience. It will take place at the Karo 11 October cinema. On July 22, the developer of unique sample libraries of folklore instruments, Ilya Efimov, will talk about the peculiarities of using virtual musical instruments to write music for films, as well as the very process of creating virtual musical instruments. On the same day, a lecture by the representative of the Orchestral Tools library Maxim Luft will take place. He will speak on how to use the orchestral instrument libraries. For those who are interested in the issues of interaction between film composers and agencies, an online meeting is planned with the creative director of the Manners McDade Artist Management LLP Jenna Fentimen. She will speak on how to make such interaction effective. These three lectures will be held online.
